School Begins!

Can you believe it, school is starting already! The summer sure has flown by fast. We had a lot of great stuff going on at the library. I hope you enjoyed the programs as much as we did. We had a lot more children complete the reading program this summer. Everyone did a great job. I enjoyed looking at your pictures and other things you handed in. Make a Splash at Your Library!

Wow! Here we are in July already! Is it hot enough for you? Why don’t you find a nice, shady spot and relax with a good book. I hope that you are all doing the reading program. If you haven’t signed up yet, it is not too late. We have seen a lot of papers already turned in. There are a lot of great prizes available. I have enjoyed seeing you at the many programs so far this summer. I hope you are having as much fun as I am. Little House on the Prairie Reading Contest

To celebrate 75 years since the book Little House on the Prairie was published, we are having a reading contest. Read one of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” books. Choose the quiz from the display that goes with that book. Answer the questions on the entrance form. Fill out the rest of the form and return it to the library by June 7th. If you answered the questions correctly, your name will be entered to win a box set of all 9 books. The quizzes and entrance forms can be found in the library, on the display table under the program calendar. Grades 2-6. Good luck and keep reading!

One Book, Every Young Child - "What a Treasure"!

Find a treasure at the Ephrata Public Library. Each year the Ephrata Public Library participates in Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child program. This program highlights the importance of early literacy development in preschoolers. This year’s book is What a Treasure by Jane and Will Hillenbrand. Come to the library and check out the material we have on display right inside the main entrance. Also, on April 26 at 4:00 PM we will be reading the book at the library and will have many fun centers and activities to do. If you would like to join us, please make sure you register on line. New Program Sign-ups!

April and May programs are available for sign ups. I just wanted to mention a few things about signing up. Please remember to put your child’s name not yours when you sign up. I use these lists to make name tags. Also, if two or more date are listed for a program, i.e. story times, you only need to put your child’s name once and the computer will put them on all the dates listed.

Don’t forget about our Dr. Seuss reading program. It is a simple way to enjoy some free entertainment with your kids. All you do is pick up a bookmark at the library, read one Dr. Seuss book to your child (or they can read one)and write it on the bookmark. Then return the bookmark to the circulation desk and receive one free adult and one free child’s ticket to see Seussical Jr. playing at the EPAC Theater. They are having a special showing for us on March 25^th at 7:30 PM. I have seen parts of the show and it is a lot of fun! Hope to see you there. Keep Reading!

Getting Back to Normal!

Wow! It seems like a long time since I have seen many of you! Between the snow and my 7 days of jury duty, we totally missed Valentine's Day Story Times. Oh well, I'll just have to save the lessons for next year. I think that we are finally getting back into the swing of things and hopefully back on schedule. April and May sign ups are ready. Make sure you sign up early. Also, don't forget to check out our Dr. Seuss reading program at the library. It's a great way for your child to earn a ticket to see Seussical Jr. at EPAC on March 25th. Tailwaggers

Do you like dogs? Wouldn’t be great if once a month you could complete your reading assignment by reading to a dog? Well if you are in grades 1-4, you can. Once a month, on a Tuesday from 4-5:00 PM you can come to read to a dog. You get to spend 5-10 minutes reading to a furry friend. They are great listeners. Plus they do not interrupt or criticize you while they read. They like all kinds of stories. But they did mention that they are partial to dog stories and don’t care much for cat stories. These dogs are specially trained K-pet dogs so they are very friendly. Sign up today! Remember all sign-ups are done online on our website. Have you ever wished you could speak another language? Have you ever wished that you and your friends could talk to each other and have others wonder what you are saying? Well here’s your chance. Come to the library and learn German. You will learn some basic words and phrases, sing a few songs and play some traditional German games. It should be a lot of fun! The classes/story times will be held Wednesdays in January and February from 4-4:30 PM. Learn a new language and have fun, all at the same time.

The holiday season is quickly approaching. To celebrate the upcoming holidays, we have a few special programs scheduled. First, our Family Story Time theme will be Christmas around the World. We will be looking at holiday traditions from different cultures. We will be doing crafts that tie in with a few of the traditions. We will also be having a special holiday snack. Secondly, we will be having a special family night on Tuesday, December 22 from 6-8 PM. We will be watching The Polar Express. Don’t miss out on the fun!

Reading for the Record!

WE DID IT! We broke the record! On Thursday, October 8, we were part of a nationwide annual early literacy event, Read for the Record. Our goal for Lancaster County was 2,500 children who heard this year’s book the Very Hungry Caterpillar. We had 2,529. Last year we had 2,347. That is so exciting! I wonder how many we can read to next year?

Emma Lou is the newest member of the staff! “Who is Emma Lou?” You ask. Well she is the scarecrow the children and their families made last night during the Family Story Time. She is sitting on the bench in the Young Adult section of our library. She is busy reading her favorite story about scarecrows. The next time you are in the library, stop over and say “Howdy” to Emma Lou. She may even have a special coloring book for you to take home. But please do not touch. She is a sensitive scarecrow.

Scarecrows! Fall decorating would not be complete without pumpkins, colored corn and scarecrows. That is why our next family story time theme is scarecrows. We will be having a fun story or two about scarecrows and some fun coloring pages. But instead of each child making an individual project, we are going to be making a group project. It is going to be one large stuffed scarecrow that will sit in the children’s area. Plus Miss Shelley will be making a special scarecrow treat. It should be a lot of fun. It will be on Thursday, October 15. If you wish to join us, stop in or call the library. Spaces are limited!

We had a lot of fun last evening at the library! As part of our Special Guest Reader Program, we had Akron Boro Council member Joyce Moyer come and read to a group of children. She read us a story about a puppy growing up. She then shared pictures about her dog General. General is a Saint Bernard. She made special Saint Bernard cookies and let the children each take a picture of General home. I think everyone had a good time. We are looking for more special guest readers. We are hoping to get people from the community to come and share a book with the children. If you have a special hobby or interest, we can tie that into the story time as well. This is a great way to share the love of reading to children! Please contact the library if you are interested.

Italian Story Times!

Did you know that the best time to learn a language is when you are young. That is why we are very excited to offer an Italian story time. Unlike a regular story time, where a story is read, you sing a song and do a craft, the children will actually be learning some basic words in Italian. We are so lucky to have our director’s mom running the class. She will be reading a familiar story in English and telling what some of the words are in Italian. She has some fun activities planned to help make the language come alive to them. What a fun and easy way to learn a new language! The story times will be held the 2^nd and 4^th Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. Hope to see you there!

I can’t believe that the Summer Reading Program is almost over. As a matter of fact, you should have turned in your reading logs by now. If you forgot to hand in your sheet, you still can but we are very low on prizes and a number of our sponsor coupons are gone. Don’t forget that you can still get a PA Renaissance Faire pass if you earned a Dutch Wonderland ticket or a Laserdome pass, even if you have already handed in your log. See someone at the circulation desk. Supplies are limited. I know that school will soon be starting, but I hope that you continue to come to the library. I’ve just got word that Queen Elizabeth at the PA Renaissance Faire is quite upset that everyone who finished their reading logs for the summer reading program go to see a mere princess at Dutch Wonderland. She would like to have these very smart readers come to see her. She is the Queen after all. O.K .,so maybe that isn’t exactly how it happened, but we do have PA Renaissance Faire passes for those who completed their reading for the summer. Teens, if you have completed 28 hours of reading and have earned a pass to the laserdome, you may also have a pass to the PA Renaissance Faire. All children ages 6-12 who have completed their reading log and have done the extra reading to earn a ticket to Dutch Wonderland may also have a pass to the PA Renaissance Faire. You can only receive a pass if you have met the above criteria. So, hurry into the library and pick up your pass and go see the queen and all her medieval friends. But, remember supplies are limited!

Expanding the traditional role of children's services, Family Place builds on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parental involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in young children's growth and development.

Family Place Libraries redesign the library environment to be welcoming and appropriate for children beginning at birth; connect parents with the resources, programs and services offered at the library and other family service agencies; and reach out to non-traditional library users. Parent/Child Workshops
Wednesdays, October 22, 29 and November 5, 12 & 19 - 9:30-10:30 a.m.
The library is offering our five-week series of workshops for parents and caregivers of toddlers 12-36 months. Parents can play, read, and interact with their toddlers in a family-friendly setting, equipped with age-appropriate toys, books, games, etc. A different community resource specialist will be available at each session to talk informally with parents about their interests and concerns regarding their child’s development. Participants are asked to attend all five-workshop sessions.

Beginning April 1st, the library now has a subscription for NetLibrary's downloadable eAudiobooks for children and young adults! The collection currently includes over 200 children's books and over 170 young adult books. To use the service, you must first register in person at the library. There is no charge to use the service - all you need is a PC and a compatible MP3 player!

History Contest for Young Writers!

The Hershey Museum is sponsoring a writing contest. Deadline is February 15, 2008. The contest is open to all students in grades 5 through 8 who live in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry or York Counties.

Students may submit a factual account, fictional narrative, short story or poem about a person, era or event in history.

Sing, Sign & Story Time @ The Library

Join us for a series of 4 special story times where American Sign Language will be demonstrated as songs and stories are shared with children and their parents. Dates for this new story time are Fridays, January 11, 18, 25 & February 1 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. A craft will also be included in each story time. Parents are encouraged to sign up for the entire series, since each session will feature different themes with different stories and signs. The first session will be led by Cynthia Shultz, a certified Sign2Me Presenter. Ages 3-5 plus a parent/caregiver.

The Mitten Tree is Ready for Your Donations!

Ephrata Public Library encourages giving with 8th annual Mitten Tree Project!

The Ephrata Public Library and other public libraries throughout Lancaster County are sponsoring their 8th annual Mitten Tree Campaign. Librarians from the county's public libraries, in the spirit of holiday giving, will be collecting new mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, earmuffs and umbrellas for children in Lancaster County through December 21st.

The Mitten Tree Project has been hugely successful during the past seven years. Each year collections from public libraries throughout Lancaster County have totaled over 2,000 items. Last year's 2,885 donations are record-breaking. Lancaster County's Children and Youth Social Service Agency will oversee the distribution to children throughout the county. Children and Youth Director of Quality Assurance, Amy M. Campbell, said of the project, "We love the Mitten Tree Project -- it gives us the ability to partner with libraries and at the same time support our kids."

Lancaster County's Children and Youth Social Service Agency serves approximately 4,000 children throughout Lancaster County. Individuals interested in participating should bring new, unwrapped mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, umbrellas and earmuffs to the library during normal hours of operations.

To kick off summer reading, the library is again hosting our annual Summer Reading Carnival. The carnival runs from 3-6 p.m. and sign-ups are not necessary. At 7 p.m., Marion the Ventriloquist will be performing. Sign-ups for this program are requested. So, bring the kids to the carnival - there will be games, a special story time by the Princess from Dutch Wonderland, face painting, crafts, activities and more! We hope to see you there!

Summer Reading is Coming! Are you Ready?

This year's summer reading program is "Get a Clue @ Your Library." There are so many programs and reading opportunities for Ephrata area children, plus a special grand prize that is ONLY available at the Ephrata Public Library. Younger children who complete the program will be entered in a drawing for a Curious George plush. Elementary school children who complete the program will have their names put into a drawing for a large display of the house-elf from the Harry Potter series, Dobby.

Sign-ups for programs begin June 1st and can be done by calling the library at 738-9291 or stopping in during normal business hours. Some programs fill up very fast so make your selections and get your name on the list!

Tumblebooks For Kids!

TumbleBooks Available To Lancaster County Children!

TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of TumbleBooks , animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.

The TumbleBook Library collection is accessed on-line from computers in the library with Internet connection, or from home through a direct link on the library website.

The TumbleBook Library is a collection of licensed titles from children's book publishers such as Scholastic, Chronicle Books, Candlewick Press, Charlesbridge Press, Harcourt, Little Brown, Walker and Company and others.

Story Books:
The TumbleBook Library has a selection of children's favorite story books. Old time favorites such as "The Paper Bag Princess" by Robert Munch come to life in an educational and interactive way. Other titles include, "Diary of a Worm", "Miss Malarkey Doesn't Live in Room 10", "One Duck Stuck" and "Tops and Bottoms". Kids can also see their favorite fairy tales such as "Jack and the Beanstalk" and "Old Mother Hubbard" come to life.

Language Learning:
The Language Learning Section comes with a growing selection of books in Spanish and French . Many are bilingual titles which allows the user to read the book in 2 languages.

Chapter Books/YA Novels:
Now older students can read the growing collection of children's classics like Black Beauty, Alice in Wonderland and Anne of Green Gables. Our TumbleReadable format, with its innovative text size slider which allows the reader to adjust to the text size which I right for them, makes reading online fun and accessible.

Audio Books:
TumbleBookLibrary includes a collection of full length, unabridged, streaming audio books. Perfect for extended story time.
